RESOURCES 1.
LAND RESOURCES This
district has total geographical area of 8070.6 Sq. Kilometers; out of
which the total cultivated area is 4,09,239 hectres, and forests are
spread over 2664.25 Sq.Km of land. 2.
OCCUPATIONAL DISTRIBUTION This
district has a large work force of 9, 27,739 persons. The occupational
pattern of the work force with percentage to total workers is as under:

LIVE STOCK RESOURCES
The live stock population of the district as per February 93 live
stock census are as follows:
The
rich live stock population of the district gives a promising future of
animal resources development and allied sources. 5.
FOREST RESOURCES The
total forest area of the district is 3149.90 Sq.Km. which is around 28% of
the totalgeographical area . The break up of forest area is given below :
Major
portion of the forests are located in Sorada, Kodala, Khallikote,
Imana,Karachuli, Buguda, Tarasingi, Gallery, Dholpita
and Durga Prasad areas. Themain
forest products
are timber, bamboo, myrabolin, tamarind, mahua, sal, resin,
kenduleave, siali leaves, sal leaves & neem & karanja seeds. 6.
MINERAL RESOURCES The
contribution of
mineral to
the economy of the district is quite insignificant so far only one
mine at Matikhala is being operated by I.R.E.Ltd., to exploit sand
deposits containing monozite, zircon, rutile illuminite. Black granite
stones are also available in plenty all over the district which has scope
for a number of stone crushing & stone polishing units . Other

FISHERIES RESOURCES Ganjam
is potentially rich in inland and Brackish Water Fisheries. It has coast
line of 60 Kms with 26 fishing villages and 14 fish landing centres. There
are about 20,000 fishermen
population dependent on in land , Brackish Water and marine
fisheries. The available in
land water resources are 27,686 hectares , out of which 8321.33 hectares
are ponds and 19364.91 hectares
are reservoirs. The area developed till 31st March 1994 was 5005.42
hectares (pond) and 1910 hectares (reservoirs). The
brackish water fisheries
development agency had surveyed the area suitable for
brackish water
prawn culture
in the
5 coastal blocks viz. Chatrapur, Ganjam, Khallikote, Rangeilunda
and Chikiti and found that 2,845.26 hectares are available for development
, of this
2394.35 hectares
belong to Govt. and 450.90 hectares belong to private owners. The
area developed
till 31st March 1994 under brackish water fisheries was 1284.28
hectares. 8.
MARINE RESOURCES The
long sea
and Chilka
coast line
is the source of rich
marine products in the district. Besides this the coast line serves as a
rich resource of lime shells. As a consequence this district
supplies sizable
portion of total lime
needs of the State. Ganjam
and Humma area and the area near
the mouth of river Bahuda and Rushikulya are the rich sources of salt production,
which caters not only to
the needs
of the
district but also of the state. A major industry, Jayshree
Chemicals has been set up at Ganjam utilising
salt as its raw material. The total salt
producing area
of the district is about 5,500 acres, out of which 1238 acres are
under co-operative societies fold and the rest are with private lease
basis. On an average about
50,000 to 60,000 tons of salt are produced annually.
